How Much Does Rug Cleaning Actually Cost?
A real breakdown of what goes into rug cleaning pricing — by fiber type, not a generic flat rate.
If you’ve searched “how much does rug cleaning cost” and gotten a dozen different answers, you’re not alone. The honest reason prices vary so much — even between rugs that look similar — comes down to one thing: what your rug is actually made of.
Fiber type is the single biggest factor in rug cleaning pricing, more than size or how dirty it looks. Here’s our real, current pricing by fiber:
- Synthetic (polyester, nylon, polypropylene) — $2/sqft
- Cotton (including dhurries) — $2.50/sqft
- Jute & Natural Fiber (including sisal, seagrass) — $3/sqft
- Viscose (also called art silk, bamboo silk, rayon) — $3/sqft
- Wool — Machine-Made (e.g. Safavieh-style rugs) — $3/sqft
- Wool — Hand-Knotted — $6/sqft
- Silk — $5/sqft
- Oriental & Persian — $8/sqft
Why the Range Is So Wide
Synthetic rugs are the most forgiving fiber we clean — they tolerate wet cleaning well and rarely need special handling, which keeps the cost down. On the other end, Oriental and Persian rugs require dye testing before we ever introduce water, hand-detailing, and slower, more controlled drying — real extra time and skill that the price reflects.
Wool is a good example of why “just tell me a price” doesn’t really work for rugs. A lot of wool rugs — including popular brands like Safavieh — are machine-made, not hand-knotted. They’re well-made, but manufactured rather than hand-tied, which is why we price machine-made wool separately from genuine hand-knotted wool. If you’re not sure which one you have, we can usually tell at a glance.
What About Minimums?
A $150 minimum applies to pickup & delivery orders, and $50 for drop-off — so a very small, inexpensive rug might cost more to have picked up than it’s actually worth in cleaning alone. If that’s the case for your rug, drop-off is almost always the better option.
